The research group led by PD Dr. Stefan Bauersachs is receiving significant funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) through the Lead Agency Procedure with France for a four-year project. The project, titled "Oviductal organoids to study the embryo-maternal dialogue and develop strategies to alleviate climate change impact on cattle breeding", is a collaboration with the research group of Prof. Marie Saint-Dizier at the INRAE Centre Val-de-Loire Nouzilly. The award recognizes his contribution titled: "Changes in the Utero-Placental Immune Milieu During Normal and Antigestagen-Induced Luteolysis in the Dog." This study was co-funded by an SNSF project (Authors: Tavares Pereira M, Nowaczyk R, Aslan S, Ay SS, Kowalewski MP). Kowalewski, PhD, received the Best Poster Award at the 2018 Basel-Zurich MD-PhD/MSc Retreat for her work titled "Role of HIF1α in the regulation of STAR-mediated steroidogenesis."
PD Dr. Karl Klisch, from the Institute of Veterinary Anatomy, has received a project grant (Seed Money Grant) from the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) through the Leading House at the University of St. Gallen. The research project involves collaboration with the research group of Prof. Angelica Miglino from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, focusing on the pathogenesis of retained placenta in dairy cows. The project is titled: "Why do some cows retain the afterbirth?"
Prof. Dr. Mariusz Kowalewski, PhD, Professor of Functional Microanatomy at the Institute of Veterinary Anatomy, has received significant project funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) for his project titled "Feto-maternal communication and endocrine mechanisms involved in induction of parturition in the dog." Kowalewski, PhD, was awarded a poster prize at the 2018 ZIHP (Zurich Center for Integrative Human Physiology) Symposium for her poster presentation titled: "Role of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF1α) in the regulation of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (STAR)-mediated gonadal steroidogenesis."

The poster contribution from the Institute of Veterinary Anatomy, titled "Spatio-temporal expression of uterine and placental extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins at selected stages of canine pregnancy and at pre-partum luteolysis," was awarded the "Young Scientist Award for Anatomists, in the category: Female Reproduction" at the 32nd EAVA Congress (European Association of Veterinary Anatomists) in Hannover, 2018.
The first author of the study is Felix R. Graubner, a PhD student at the Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (GCB) at the University of Bern and a staff member of the Institute of Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Zurich. The study was conducted in collaboration with veterinary faculties in Diyarbakir and Nicosia (Authors: Felix R. Graubner, Alois Boos, Selim Aslan, Ibrahim Kucükasan, and Mariusz P. Kowalewski).

Sophie Zatta was awarded the 2018 Annual Prize of the University of Zurich on April 28, 2018, during the Dies Academicus, upon recommendation by the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Zurich, for her dissertation titled "Transcriptome analysis reveals differences in mechanisms regulating cessation of luteal function in pregnant and non-pregnant dogs." The research was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mariusz P. Kowalewski, PhD, at the Institute of Veterinary Anatomy.
